Project 2
Shree Mahendra Primary School
"A Small Initiative For Bigger and Better"
Shree Mahendra Primary School was established in 1960 A.D. The school is currently located at Ichowk, Helambu Rural Municipality. There are currently 107 students in class ranging from one to five. It is a small school with just 4 government teachers post. The school was originally established as a ‘Gurukul’ a Sanskrit education system.
Legal Status
The school is a government run primary school and is monitored by District Education Office, Sindhupalchowk.
Welfare Policies and Facilities
The school is a fully funded government school therefore there is no provision of tuition fee. The Helambu Rural Municipality provided a budget of NPR 1,30,000 (USD 1200) to manage finance. The school provides facilities of books and supplies to students.
Challenges
Currently the school is being operated under small hut with steel roofs. The building of the school was completely destroyed by the 2015 earthquake. The school lacks basic infrastructure like physical building, furniture and fixtures, teaching materials, computers. Approximately only 70-75 students are regular and keeping students from dropping out of classes is one of the biggest challenges. The local people have contributed their land to the school and an organization is funding to construct a small 7 room building in that land.
